Keeping Your Mini Fridge Running Smoothly

Mini fridges are great – they let you keep snacks and beverages nearby when you work. Or they’re a great extra source of fridge storage in a house that can’t fit a second full-sized fridge. Just like real fridges, however, they occasionally need some maintenance to keep them clean and running smoothly.

Defrosting Your Mini Fridge

Sometimes you’ll find that your mini fridge needs to be defrosted. The first thing to do is empty out the fridge – perhaps by eating everything in it. After that, take a look at the settings your mini fridge has. It might have an auto-defrost mode, in which case ignore the rest of this section and just use that.

If there isn’t a defrost mode, the process will take around 24 hours. Unplug the mini fridge and prop the door open so it doesn’t swing shut. You’ll want to keep the door open for two reasons: first, it’ll help the fridge defrost faster and second it’ll keep your fridge from smelling bad while it defrosts.

Put a towel down at the bottom part of the fridge’s interior to soak up the water. You also might want to put a towel down in the area around the open door. Keep an eye on it, switching out the towel if you need to (this depends on how much frost is built up). When it’s done check the freezer compartment if there is one – some freezer compartments have a water collection tray which you’ll want to empty.

Temperature Issues

Is your mini refrigerator not getting sufficiently cold anymore? It might be that you need to do some maintenance on some of its parts. One possible culprit is the door – is it sealing tight? Check for loose hinges and worn gaskets – tighten and replace as needed. Another cause might be frost and debris buildup on the working parts of your fridge. For this you might want to consult the manual: locate the condenser and evaporator coils and wipe them clean with a brush or cloth.

Compact Fridge Transportation

If you have to move your mini fridge (say you’re moving dorms), the main thing to do is to keep it upright. Keeping it horizontal (or, even worse, upside down) may cause mechanical problems.
